In April last year we already got a small taste of what was to come from this new Death Metal band from Canada. But it seems that Viscous needed a year to get their debut 7” EP out, but if you are into uncomplicated and Old School Death Metal, this was very much worth the wait.
The opening track is the single that was available in digital form a year prior the release of this 7” EP and, indeed, this track set the tone for the entire EP. Low rumbling, mostly mid-tempo with a catchy punky rhythm and some great gurgling vocals: nothing new under the sun, that’s for sure. But when it is done right, it is done right. And Viscous definitely know their craft and due to the rather short playing time of just over 12 minutes (both sides combined) this is the ultimate way to enjoy this sort of Death Metal.
Its simplicity is the key. Why complicate things or to disgrace your song writing with endless snoozing HM2 “grooves” when you can do it this way? Okay, there are some grooves and it is not as über-basic as Nunslaughter, but the fact that they have incorporated bits and pieces of everything makes it sound way more like American Death Metal than European. There is a lot of old Incantation, Brutality, Deicide, Monstrosity and especially Autopsy in here. It might not surprise to find ‘Twisted Mass Of Burnt Decay’ (the opener of Autopsy’s ‘Mental Funeral’) as the closer for this nice and tasty EP.
