This new Black/Death Metal band from Canada debuts with an EP that clocks just under 20 minutes, but musically leaves very little to the imagination. In the right Canadian tradition, these six tracks are treating you with the finest tunes of what could be called the most savage and primitive pummelling you can imagine.
The duo makes no effort to hide their adoration for bands like Antediluvian, Conqueror and Revenge. Although some of the riffs are a bit more Death Metal oriented and lean a bit more towards the likes of Mitochondrian, Adversarial, Paroxsihzem or Phobocosm (all Canadian as well), it is the chaotic nature and the all-consuming speed that attracts attention the most. However, when the music slows down a bit in tempo and throws in some play with menacing, almost doom-like atmospheres, the intensity increases. This also brings the necessary dynamics to the music, something that is also enhanced by the almost pastoral intro and interlude as well.
While ‘Damnatio Ad Bestias’ doesn’t offer anything new when compared to the other bands in the field, it definitely is a great first effort. With this musical back ground it will not surprise that Nuclear War Now! Productions has signed up for the release of the vinyl edition of this EP. For now you can pick up a (rather limited) copy on cassette tape.
