Regere Sinister, a band comprised of a duo who are also together in Ride For Revenge and Horse Latitudes and further have experience in such bands as Hail Conjurer, Hollow Woods, Hooded Menace and Depravement, had released a demo and three splits before arriving at this debut album. Two of those splits have been released on 12” by Nuclear War Now! Productions, also the label responsible for this first full-length player. And, for sure, taking the aesthetics of both band and label, this is a pact made in hell.
Besides the more War/Bestial sort of Black/Death Metal, Nuclear War Now! Productions is a label that has a revered history of unearthing the most occult and authentic sounding Black Metal from all corners of the world. Often bareboned and raw as fuck, but always compelling. Whether it is the early work of a well-known band like Varathron or Thou Art Lord, the modern day flagbearers of occultism like Perverted Ceremony and Moenen Of Xezbeth or acts that are stripped from any bells and whistles like Cemetery Lights, Nihil Invocation, Vengeance Sorcery or Bone Awl, the label always snatches up the best of the best.
Regere Sinister definitely fits just on the crossway between all the bands mentioned above. It has the authentic atmosphere of bands like early Varathron and the Punkish vibe and bass-heaviness of Nihil Invocation. Consequently, this makes ‘Inside The Eye Of Horned Winds’ an album that will appeal to fans of the alluring early steps of Black Metal, whether it is those early recordings of Barathrum, Beherit, Samael or Necromantia. The low rumblings, slow pummelling with its sudden bursts of rage and the hoarse vocals, it all adds to the Doom-ridden and jet black essence of the music.
In just around 25 minutes ‘Inside The Eye Of Horned Winds’ serves you a portion of blackness that has very few equals in today’s Extreme Metal, but it will find its way to the ears of all those who are still stuck in those late 80’s or just prefer their pitch black art in a genuinely evil and occult way.
