Primordial Serpent – Ascension of the Dark Age [Re-Release]

primordial serpent – ascension of the dark age [re-release]

Info

Primordial Serpent is a one man black metal band hailing from Canada. Formed in 2020 by Geoff Coran (also in None Shall Remain).

Musically the band explores fantasy themes inspired by the lore of FromSoftware role playing games, such as ‘Dark Souls’ and ‘Bloodborne’. The lyrical content also draws inspiration from Pagan mythology, the occult, and the forces of nature.

With ‘Ascension of the Dark Age’, the debut was delivered. And re-released by Masters of Kaos Productions for a wider audience.

As for the music itself, Primordial Serpent plays slightly epic uptempo old school orthodox Black Metal that evokes a sense of desolation, mystery, and foreboding. Every song is a bit about aspects of the game. Influences? Influences rank from Venom to Judas Iscariot, to Bloodstorm, to Immortal, I’d say.

The haunting and rocking melodies and mighty dissonant chords, that pop up occasionally, mirror the eerie landscapes and cryptic lore found in both series mentioned earlier. Geoff Coran tries to create a pretty tight outfit with Primordial Serpent and vocal-wise he delves into themes of decay, immortality, grand battles and the struggle against cosmic forces, all centred around his riffs and chords.

It’s not perfect though, this debut, for instance: the drumming on the album is far too simple and rather unnoticeable, the songs are a bit arranged in the same way and predictable. But nonetheless Geoff tries to forge a dark and eerie world of conflict with his entertaining music. And did I tell you that the band’s name is derived from characters of the ‘Dark Souls’ franchise? Their enigmatic nature and deep lore are said to add to the mystique of the game.

For you to check out the music and to confront this Primordial Serpent.
