Perversion / Pyromancer – Subjugation Through Cruelty [Split]

perversion / pyromancer – subjugation through cruelty [split]

Info

This new split 7” EP combines two Black/Death Metal bands from the USA. Perversion on the A-side has already released a significant amount of releases since the band was formed in 2008, with their latest album being released by Hells Headbangers Records. The B-side is for Pyromancer, whose sole previously recorded material was a demo tape from 2015 And although it was reissued on CD by Godz Ov War Productions a year later, it is quite likely that Pyromancer will ring much fewer bells. Yet, Godz Of War Productions seemingly is a good matchmaker, as both bands do fit together perfectly.

First Perversion then, on these recordings still operating as a trio, do offer a slight less devastating piece of Black/Death Metal than they did on ‘Dies Irae’, their Hells Headbangers Records released sophomore album. The song that they have on offer here, ‘Necroplasma Coagulation’ has a more distinct Thrash Metal vibe to it, courtesy of a more Thrashy riffings, guitar tone and a Punky rhythm throughout the whole track. But while that album already had more in common with the early South American stalwarts like Sarcófago, Mutilator and pre-Roadrunner Sepultura than with the much darker bands like Abysmal Lord or Teitanblood, this one track has an even more old school 80’s Heavy Metal echo to it (including a Slayer-esque falsetto scream in the beginning). Yet, the chaotic nature of the music that they have conveyed on ‘Dies Irae’ is still very much there, making this a very interesting contribution to the split EP.

Pyromancer, on the other side, offers two shorter and considerably darker tracks. But just like Perversion, Pyromancer too is not really one the most blazing or chaotic acts in the genre. Their roots are also in the more Thrash Metal oriented territories of the genre, but the low and more savage vocal delivery gives them a way more brutal character than their split mates. A bit more standard riffing, as opposed to the Heavy Metal laced guitars of Perversion, also adds to the overall primitive experience of Pyromancer. Honestly, I have to admit I had missed out on their previously released demo tape from 2015, but I would definitely not have minded to have seen (or better, heard) a bit more from this duo. The fact that they are both active in quite a few other bands has probably not contributed to Pyromancer’s inactivity over the past almost ten years.
