Nebiros – Rehearsal Demo 1991 [Re-Release]

nebiros – rehearsal demo 1991 [re-release]

Info

Earlier this spring Nuclear War Now! Productions reissued Nebiros’ first full-length album from 1996, an album that although it was released much later than other classics from the Southern continent, is widely regarded as one of the pinnacles of the Latin American Extreme Metal scene. That album, ‘Guerreros De Lucifer’, has been a much sought-after recording that perfectly captured the zeitgeist of the wild and chaotic metal scene in Colombia and surrounding countries, but due to its rough and crude nature will not be to everyone’s liking. While that album is indeed quite an overall raw and unpolished affair, the recordings presented on this Nuclear War Now! Productions released piece of vinyl are by far superior when it comes to underproduced music.

So, no, ‘Guerreros De Lucifer’ might not appeal to the average Watain-listener, but ‘Rehearsal Demo 1991’ is even quite a tad harder to swallow and only fodder for the true connoisseur and insider of that thriving South American “Ultrametal” scene from the late 80’s and early 90’s. But, like many a Nuclear War Now! Productions release, it is not only about the musical content, the label also specializes in saving those old and (almost) forgotten recordings from fading into total oblivion.

Musically, this is basically what you could expect from a band from these regions in their earliest, embryonical stages. It is mainly mid-tempo stuff inspired by the early works of Samael, Rotting Christ, Varathron and Mayhem. It might not come as a total surprise that towards the end of the demo we are treated to covers of Mayhem and Samael, ‘Deathcrush’ and ‘Into The Pentagram’ respectively. But mostly it gives a good insight in how the band started; they were still developing their style and, not in the least, their musical abilities.

In a historical perspective, ‘Rehearsal Demo 1991’ is worthy to indeed be kept from fading into further obscurity because these are the only recordings to feature Sacrilegus on vocals before his tragic murder in 1992. Also, this features the band in a full line-up before the band would carry on as a duo for the majority of their first years.

For those who are interested in helping to keep this band’s legacy alive or are curious to hear Nebiros’ undeveloped foetal stages, this vinyl-only release is a great way to do so. I can imagine that this is not everyone’s cup of (black) tea and when it is, it will not be a record that you’ll play on a weekly basis, but Nuclear War Now! Productions can only be lauded for their tenacity and determination or unearthing and preserving this kind of material.
