Mistcavern – Into Twilight [EP]

mistcavern – into twilight [ep]

Info

The Hungarian four-piece band Mistcavern was formed in 2019, and straight away released a pretty phenomenal demo called ‘Winds of Misery’. That release did not go by unnoticed and the band signed to Iron Bonehead Productions. It’s that label that released the band’s first EP entitled ‘Into Twilight’ in 2022 on CD and vinyl, followed slightly later by a cassette edition courtesy of A Fine Day to Die Records.

Having been recorded in 2020, the EP closely follows the sound of the band’s first demo. The sound on both of these recordings can be best described as an extremely authentic interpretation of the debut album of the legendary Norwegian Black Metal act Satyricon. You could even go so far to say that ‘Into Twilight’ sounds as a release that Satyricon could have recorded right around the release of ‘Dark Medieval Times’. Just to make it clear, that should count as a tremendous amount of credit towards Mistcavern for being able to approach that sound in such detail.

Of course slight differences can be spotted, such as for instance a slightly less raw tone to the guitars on ‘Into Twilight’. But it has the same dynamic and diverse soundscape, with cosmic keys creating  a beautiful atmosphere, ice cold Black Metal riffs piercing through your ear drums, vocals howling like wolves at the moon and most of all, the ability to write compelling songs that captivate the listener. While each of the tracks is stellar, in particular ‘To the Starless Domain’ stands out for the eerie combination of guitars and keys that almost sound as if they’re melting together and the captivating change of rhythm early on in the track. But my favorite tracks is ’Dissolving in Infinite Despair’, the most mesmerizing and fiercest song out of the EP that makes the band sound truly shine.

Mistcavern follows up their great demo with an even better first EP. Honouring the sound of early Satyricon with four terrific songs, ‘Into Twilight’ is a fantastic release that should not go by unnoticed by the fans of the old Norwegian Black Metal sound. I cannot wait to hear more material from these Hungarians!
