Master – Let’s Start a War

master – let’s start a war

Info

Paul Speckmann is quite a busy guy, judging by what he has done in the last few years. Abomination, Martyr, Krabathor, just a few bands that are somehow related to Paul Speckmann. But now it’s time for another effort with his true love Master.

Master is ofcourse a legendary band within the Death Metal scene. Unfortunately I must say that this record is quite a deception. Nowadays the Death Metal of Master is mostly influenced by old bands like Motörhead, Black Sabbath and maybe Judas Priest (because of the riffwork), and all of that with a greasy sound.

Ofcourse, sometimes Master knows where to put some speed, and Speckmann’s vocals are still sick as ever. But the song material is quite simplistic and almost bluesy at times. It’s all too predictable and from someone who’s been around this long, I expect a lot more than this.

The songs that are of a decent level are ‘American Freedom’, ‘Dictators’ and ‘Disturbed’ (nice and thrashy). The rest should have been a lot better. ‘Miss Misery’ bores the hell out of me and ‘Purchase a new handgun’ is even a pure blues-song. Now I do like to listen to some blues every now and then, but I don’t want to hear Master playing it. A missed opportunity, that’s what it is.

By the way, there’s something strange about the line-up, because according to the CD booklet it’s supposed to exist of Paul Speckmann and the ex-USA presidents James Polk (died in 1849), Harry Truman (died in 1972) and Ronald Reagan (so senile he couldn’t remember a guitar part if he wanted to).

So I guess this album has a positive effect on somebody. I’ll just play ‘On the seventh day god created Master’ again.
