Infernathan / Necro Ritus – Ascension Vengeance For God’s Slaughter [Split]

infernathan / necro ritus – ascension vengeance for god’s slaughter [split]

Info

The ones in the knowing that when a band like Infernathan teams up with the Polish Unpure Records label, that certainly you are in for a treat. And that is what ‘Ascension For God’s Slaughter’ is, a treat for those who don’t like their Black Metal, let’s say, not all too polished. Infernathan is sharing this release with Necro Ritus and for both bands, that only happen to have a couple of demo recordings under their belts, this is the first “proper” release. So, yessh, go dig out your bullet belts, sharpen your spikes and smear your eyes full of soot and let’s go…

First up is Infernathan, a band conceived by two degenerated and perverted souls who are also responsible for bands like Witchcraft, Ceremonial Torture, Necromonarchia Daemonum and Beherit. Not quite the least of bands in this particular genre of “music”. And much like the music they offer with any of those aforementioned bands, they are not doing anything remotely different with Infernathan. This is primitive and utterly ugly Black Metal in the most savage way possible, furious outbursts go hand in hand with spooky keyboard passages and the barking vocals and gritty, grinding guitars do remind you that time can indeed stand still. Purely regressive stuff that sounds as evil as it does sound archaic. Especially the wacky keyboards do add to the feeling of those very primal Black Metal recordings of around the late 80’s and very early 90’s, before the Second Wave of Black Metal broke things down into way more delicate niche genres.

The second half of the split CD is for Necro Ritus, the brainchild of Behemoth, whose latest project, Cursed Penetrator, I recently reviewed by pure coincidence. Apart from these two bands, he is best known for his work with bands like Aske and also Kurnugia, but since the early 90’s this gentleman has been in many a band and certainly knows the ropes. Musically, Necro Ritus is in exactly the same corner as the split partner, clunky and unrefined Black Metal. Again, it harks back to the really early days of extreme Black Metal from around the 1990’s, when there was no sign of any musical development or delicate Folk influences. To get some sense, it wouldn’t be out of place for Necro Ritus to share their next split EP with American Burning Winds (not entirely coincidentally, also an act that is/was on the Unpure Records label).

‘Ascension Vengeance For God’s Slaughter’ is a thoroughly enjoyable exercise in Finnish barbaric brutality. In case you have a weak spot for this sort of uncivilized and unmusical Black Metal, this 35-minute split CD is for sure a great stop to get your kicks off.
