Hyadningar – The Weak Creation

Straight from France’s innovative Black Metal scene Hyadningar comes with their sophomore album ‘The Weak Creation’. Unlike what the title implies (I’m sure some negative review has “cleverly” poked fun at the title), this is a strong and unique album with an interesting twist on Black Metal. But what else can you expect from France lately? They’re not like other genre bending bands that have two interesting sounds that just don’t mesh, Hyadningar is certainly a Black Metal band. Instead they take certain elements of different subgenres and combine them to create a unique whole.

Some tracks are fast and brutal, some flirt with an epic/militant sound, and others even have a very strong DSBM vibe to them. The end result is something cleanly produced and accessible (don’t mistake that for lack of depth) but also something unconventional. The title track in particular exemplifies their ambitious approach. It’s a shame that Hyadningar is so overlooked; you would think that having two members from Ataraxie would help garner some attention. Oh and speaking of that I nearly forgot to mention Marquis’ vocals are excellent. Although he was slightly inconsistent on Ataraxie’s ‘Anhedonie’, his wails on ‘The Weak Creation’ are very fitting for this Black Metal offering.
