Hovert is an Atmospheric/Depressive Black Metal project from Chelyabinsk in Russia and the brainchild of Alever who also performs in the Avant-Garde Black Metal duo Art of Mortal. This projects dates back to 2010 and over the years under the Hovert banner Alever has released a couple of splits, two EP’s and three full length albums. This review will focus on his 2020 EP entitled ‘Towards Non-Being’ which was released on CD by Austrian Black Metal label Talheim Records.
Its easy to spot the depressive element to Hovert’s music right from the off. Anguished, harassed vocal work gushes forth from Alever in a deluge of grim, grief stricken outpouring, whilst a distinctly bass heavy and edgy sounding style of Black Metal plays out around him. The production on the drums gives them an interesting sound; somewhat inside their own bubble, whilst the riffs are ordinary but perfectly balanced for this mid-tempo style. In truth the Atmospheric element of this project is lost on me, I simply don’t hear it. But the simplistic but heart felt nature of the DSBM style of Hovert is interesting and though technically a far from flawless performance, there is an energy and guile to this EP that makes me want to listen to it.
