Black Cilice – Atavistic Possessions [EP]

black cilice – atavistic possessions [ep]

Info

Founded back somewhere at the end of the 00’s, Black Cilice’s rise to fame (for Black Metal standard at least) came after the release of the band’s first album. But while that debut album, ‘A Corpse, A Temple’ was already released back in 2011, it took until 2015’s reissue through Iron Bonehead Productions before it got really noticed by the wider audience of Black Metal aficionados. The band’s endless stream of demo’s and (split) EP’s also helped slowly but surely cementing the band’s name as one of the grand purveyors of the Raw and Lo-Fi sort of Black Metal.

Throughout their quindecinnial career they have managed to keep people on their toes for each of their releases. While it may be debatable if every of their albums is equally good or essential, they certainly kept stirring some admiration amongst their ever-growing following. Also in a live setting Black Cilice came out remarkably well, drawing high praise. For their most recent European trek with their American counterpart Sanguine Relic, Black Cilice in conspiracy with their long-term companion Iron Bonehead Productions presented this EP with five unreleased tracks.

Because these tracks are recorded over different sessions this can also be seen as a compilation of sorts, and since there is no real specific information available it is also a bit of a guessing game… So, let me start guessing. I think it is obvious that the last track, ‘Dissolving Dimensions’ came from the ‘Esoteric Atavism’-sessions as the overall sound is quite close that of that last full-length album. The first four tracks are more in the direction of the recordings done in 2016 for the ‘Banished From Time’ album that was released in 2017.

But regardless from where these songs are actually taken, they are all very much worthy of the Black Cilice banner. The band’s recognizable buzzy sound and overall oppressing and moody atmosphere is written all over these five tracks, the last one even sounding more distinctly Lo-Fi than the first four. It is that truly entrancing atmosphere that is almost unparalleled and thoroughly recognizable. In fact, only Candelabrum, also from Portugal, is able to compete with Black Cilice and make for a suitable comparison in both musical finesse within that murky mass of noise as well as in a truly haunting ambiance.

So, in case you were not able to catch the band on tour these days, then this EP will do the magic. And it certainly proves that Black Cilice is still right up there in the highest ranks of the current Lo-Fi Black Metal constellation.
