Armageddon – Crossing the Rubicon

armageddon – crossing the rubicon

Info

This is the band of Christopher Amott, you know, Michael Amott’s brother. They both play in Arch Enemy, and on this CD Michael does some background vocals. I think it’s on ‘The Juggernaut Divine,’ but I’m not entirely sure.

Damn, this is really good! Here, Christopher positions himself as a very talented guitarist! This was already audible in Arch Enemy, but there he plays more in the ‘service’ of the songs/band. He’s the only guitarist of Armageddon, I’m curious how they’ll solve that live with the rhythm guitar.

I’ll try to describe it: the singer has a Thrash/screaming voice that really works for me because it’s different from all those Black screams of today. The music shows similarities to Cynic, Pestilence, Atheist, and Death. However, these bands lost their aggression in their pursuit of technical perfection, but Armageddon definitely has this aggression. Delightfully driving technical Death Metal with a lot of variation, that’s the description in a nutshell.

There are actually only 6 songs on it because the other 4 consist of 1 intro and 3 instrumentals. The most beautiful instrumental track is ‘Funeral in Space,’ it reminds me a lot of early In Flames with that beautiful violin and later incoming guitar. For people who like a lot of soloing, this CD is perfect because Christopher’s solos are otherworldy! And without giving the feeling that the songs are built around the solos.

I keep going on about Christopher, but the whole band delivers an outstanding performance here! It’s a concept album by the way, and it has a space theme again (like many other Swedish bands). And finally, I’ll mention that this CD was released on the War Music label, and this label guarantees quality (e.g., In Flames, Eucharist, Arch Enemy, etc.).

And now I’m going to put this CD on repeat and won’t take it out for the next week!
