Anatomia / Eternal Rot – Anatomia / Eternal Rot [Split]

anatomia / eternal rot – anatomia / eternal rot [split]

Info

While Anatomia might forever be regarded as Coffins’ little brother, they have been around for around the same time and have released an impressive body of work of their own. Much of that consists out of a considerable amount of split releases, of which this split LP with Eternal Rot is the latest offering. Eternal Rot, for their part, has been quite active as well, releasing three full-length albums and a hand full of other releases as well.

This split LP is kicked off by the Japanese. They do deliver just that what you come to expect from them, the slow and Doom-ridden Death Metal still feels like an Autopsy 45RPM 12” that is played on 33RPM instead. The first of three tracks are pretty much in the same traditional line of slow lingering and heavy riffed Death Metal with all the other ingredients well in place as well. Quite predictable and safe, but well played and just good entertainment. With the other two tracks you are in for a bit of “surprise”. The second track is more of a haunting ambiental and noisy track that could serve as a soundtrack for a random horror movie, but it slowly leads to ‘Tenebrous Void’, one of the more interesting tracks the band has put forth in recent years. The echo of the horror-esque ambiance is still very much present and is woven expertly together with their massive wall of guitars.

On the flipside we do find Eternal Rot with two new tracks. While they might ring fewer bells than Anatomia does, the Polish/British combo is slowly but surely building their own legacy with good yet little flashy Death Metal. They too find themselves in the slow-and-pounding Death Metal territories, using meaty riffs and gurgling vocals as their main assets. A few eerie, almost rocking, guitar leads and certain tempo changes do offer some dynamics, but for the most part it is rather one-dimensional affair. ‘Recollection Under The Granite Slab’ has an even doomier sound than most of the band’s previous work, but with lacking a bit of pace, the song has a hard time really you on your toes for the full ride. While this might sound a bit negative, these guys are pretty good at their game and they do pull off some solid Doomy Death Metal tracks. A bit less interesting than their split partners perhaps, but not at all a punishment to sit through these two songs.
