Abysmal Dawn – Phylogenesis

abysmal dawn – phylogenesis

Info

Quite known in the modern Death Metal scene, Abysmal Dawn were quite active during the last 6 years since their last album (“Obsolescence”) and toured a lot since then. Some line-up changes probably were a reason too that the newest effort “Phylogenesis” needed 6 years until its release, but in the end If quality matters, who’s gona complain?

And yes, that’s already the case with the opener “Mundane Existence”, a killer crushing track with a good dose of speed and groove, touched by a certain Morbid Angelness and the Panzer-moshing aspect of a band like Dying Fetus (chaotic leadwork included) and towards the end pushing the hammerblasts again. Cool start.

If you think it continues this way, you are right! The next bloodthirsty chapter in the presence of “The Path of the Totalitarian” is not messing around with soft pillows but with nail throwing guns and chainsaw all the way through. Hints of Origin, Hate Eternal and Cannibal Corpse in it.

Really like how they alternate between brutal blasting violent parts and more dark sinister mid and slow mo tempos to enhance the atmospheric side, delivering some killer riffage that remains stuck in the brain which speaks for great song writing skills. I’d like to mention the high standard musicianship, top notch musicians here that found a good portion of technicality while not overusing it. Props to the vocals and vocallines as well which I find great, versatile and interesting. Another thumb up to Pär Olofsson for the artwork which captures the essence of the record well.

The production here is top as well and rounds up a cool album which has the good mix between fury, groove, technicality and catchiness, honouring the past and present, Death fucking Metal! To keep an eye on, could be on some lists at the end of the year. (DPF)
