Profanation – Skull Crushing Violence [EP]

profanation – skull crushing violence [ep]

Info

Profanation is a band that sprung from the minds of a number of French musicians who had previously earned their stripes in bands such as Sépulcre, Venefixion, Deströyer 666, Diabolic Oath, Goatspell, Necrowretch and Regarde Les Hommes Tomber. Although the first encounters took place as early as 2020, recording material apparently didn’t come about until relatively recently. Through their own digital channels, they already released this EP at the end of last year, but Iron Bonehead Productions was quick to deliver it to us on both vinyl and CD.

Musically this is not quite the same as any of the band member’s earlier bands, but on the other hand, it is not all that different either. At least, Profanation displays quite a few bits and pieces that can be found in a number of those other/earlier musical endeavours. The core of Profanation is built upon the earliest touchstones of Grindcore-infused Death Metal. Let’s just say that bands like Terrorizer, Napalm Death and especially Repulsion served as some of the main examples. Although generally not nearly as fast as Terrorizer or Napalm Death, Profanation certainly uses similar meaty riffs and Repulsion’s D-beat primal sound resonates throughout this less than 20-minute EP. But the whole thing is topped with a heavy old-school Death Metal flavour, again a mainly based on the American sound of the late 1980’s. Occasionally we are even treated to a screaming whammy solo, which complete the old-school image.

But the fun does not end there because, and this should perhaps come as no surprise with so much Black Metal expertise in one band, ‘Skull Crushing Violence’ features a solid Black Metal edge. The result is something more than once reminiscent of the Black/Death Metal alloy of some of that genre’s greats. Although much less chaotic as a whole, a clear echo can be heard from the more barbaric corners of the Black Metal genre. This way the EP almost feels like as if a Black Metal band is jamming on some classic Hemdale tracks.

The barking vocals and the raging and extremely aggressive bursts are the epitome of how Profanation harks back to basically all styles of aggressive music from around the late 80’s and early 90’s. The last part of the closing title track even treats you to an almost hallucinatory Doom Metal-like ending. A very well-crafted EP that definitely lives up to its title!
