Mephitic Grave is a trio from Hungary, Budapest to be exact. And their second album ‘Dreadful Seizures’ transported me back to the early 90s with their sound of Old School Death Metal.
For example; this album has the guitar sound of ‘The Bleeding’ by Cannibal Corpse. Sometimes they also sound like a broken keyboard when trying to do more melodic interludes such as in the intro and also ‘Catacomb Mind’. But that’s really my biggest gripe with this album along with the bass being barely audible.
But the sound of this album is just nostalgic enough for me to really enjoy it. The production if it was intentional or not is like taking a DeLorean, hitting the gas at 88 mph back to 1994. The vocals are perfect in the mix and they are monstrous. Everything is scooped out like the entrails of disembowelled bodies. My personal favourite track from this album is definitely ‘Coffin Levitation’.
I enjoyed this one and hope they get more recognition to have a slightly better recording the next time. Some things needed to be fleshed out sound wise, but the riffs are there and the charm is present.
