Entrapment – The Obscurity Within…

entrapment – the obscurity within…

Info

As everyone will know by now, the Swedish Death Metal of the late eighties/early nineties, the so called Sunlight-sound, is a huge influence to many bands nowadays. It’s undeniable that the Dutch ensemble Entrapment was also influenced by bands from this era.

I mean, the overall sound just screams Nihilist. Now, I would be the last person to complain about bands sounding this way. Nevertheless, even I have to admit that an overkill of bands sounding the same way inevitably makes it less interesting in the long run. The good thing is: the really good bands stick, no matter what. And yes, Entrapment hold the quality to distinguish themselves from the grey mass of faceless Entombed-imitators.

First of all, the songs are catchy, not too long. The slightly fuzzy guitar sound causes the melody lines to sound almost like an impression, crawling through your skull like a serpent, and magnetizing itself firmly to the back of your skull, to haunt your dreams for nights and nights. Furthermore, it would not do them justice to brand them solely as Swedish influenced. The album is drenched in a thick crustcore sound, and Autopsy shines through just as much. Overall, Entrapment keep the pedal to the metal, with the groove roll known from bands like Entombed and Dismember, sometimes consciously slowing stuff down with broad, open chords.

A thing I really like about this album are the somewhat atypical guitar solo’s. They have a rather traditional, almost bluesy quality. The production is very decent, could be a bit heavier, but at least doesn’t lean on the standard Boss HM-2 sound too much.

I truly hope Entrapment doesn’t sink in the great big Death Metal swamp, they deserve more and have proven themselves to be a kickass live band as well.
