‘Candles’ seems to be Diabelery’s swansong as they disbanded last year. No hard feelings between the members, but it was the right time to stop with it all.
These Greeks don’t play the universally adulated and reputable Hellenic sound, but go for a more modern concept. Comparing ‘Candles’ with its predecessor ‘Architect’, it is fair to say Diablery chose to make this album symphonic and key-driven free, and focused more on melodies via riffs.
‘Candles’ seems to be a melt-pot of many Black Metal fixings, as it has melody, aggressiveness, powerful riffs, venomous vocals…you name it. A gift for those who love the diversity within an album. But you can also consider it a critical point of this album: it’s too much of a melt-pot and one misses the common thread within it. You hear a lot, but it doesn’t stick.
Give it a listen before you decide anything.
