Seven years after unleashing their debut album, ‘Eternal Negative Trinity – Chapter II’ in 2015, Mexico’s Al Rinach 333 stirred from silence in 2022 with a demo titled ‘Only Death…’. To complete the return in 2023, marked by their sophomore album, ‘Arkanumbra.’ Both the demo and the album were released on Nocta Producciones, the label owned by bassist Rayner Valera. It’s important to note that Valera isn’t the mastermind behind Al Rinach 333; that title belongs to Themgroth, whose blackened vomiting and riffs are on all the releases.
If you favor raw Black Metal with a touch of the necromantic and occult, ‘Arkanumbra’ might be something for you. The album weaves together various influences: Nordic riffs and melodies in the Finnish way, occasional heroic chants echoing ala Borknagar’s self-titled debut album, and a distinctly Portuguese and South American atmosphere and approach. But most importantly, ‘Arkanumbra’ is an album that intrigues and compels.
Raw, unpolished and familiar, but with a certain charm that draws you in.
